Education Apps in the Classroom: Friend or Foe?

As you would have seen in our last post, technology is growing at a rapid pace; it has the benefits of allowing us to access information easier, look up videos, hold important personal dates and so on. Thanks to these advances, we can find all of these things on one device, as well as a range of apps that cater to us. We all have apps that serve a purpose, from fun apps, such as magazines, to putting together a presentation. However, when it comes to educational apps for children, are they a friend or a foe?
We know that multi touch screens in the classroom hold the key to new opportunities for learning. The MTS and the interaction it creates with students helps and motivates them to learn in a fun way. Even though most of the apps are set up for use in the classroom, they can still be used at home on any screen that allows teacher’s to see the progress of their students with recorded data and reference materials being made available. Looking after 30 or so students can be difficult so having an app that keeps all the information under the one umbrella, makes life easier.
The question on all parent and teacher’s minds is what app is best for children? Here are a few questions to ask yourself before introducing your child/student to the app:
  • What is its main purpose?
  • Is the app one that students will return to often?
  • Does the app open up new ways to learn?
  • Does the subject matter appeal to the appropriate grade level?
  • How does the app develop and guide their skills?
  • Are there multiple skill levels for children of all ages?
  • Are there relevant assessments and recorded data?
  • How does the app build on skills?
The list goes on but these main questions will help you determine whether or not the app is right for your child/student. An alternative way to see if the app is great is to trial it yourself. Playing along with the app and going through the questions above will give you an answer straight away. Here are a few apps that you can have a play with. Another bonus is that they are FREE! (Available on iTunes and Android)

My Driver License was canceled due drink driving in 2004 Sep and I have already go through all the drink driving course, assessment and got a Magistrate order to be reticence. However when I went to VIC Road I was told it has been more than 5yrs and I need to take learner test and wait 3 months for a practical driving test. It was due to that my License was SUSPENDED in April 2004.Now I do not own a car and my intention of getting my licence back in the first place is to avoid going through the leaner and practical driving test. Cause I would need a car fitted with a interlock to do the test, kind of hard to do without a car in the first place.I called VIC Road 3 times beforehand and all 3 times I gave them my full details and I was told I got till Sep before the 5yrs period is up.My question is the 5yr period start from suspension in April or cancellation in Sep?Cause I can't see myself affording a new car in any near future. Optional Information:State/Country: AustraliaAlready Tried:Nothing yet really. Other than been to VIC Road and getting the bad news.

Is Your Child Struggling With His Or Her Homework? We Have Some Resources To Help!

There are a couple of options the library offers to students who need help with their school work. The first is our Homework Help Now database, which can be accessed via our homepage. This database provides expert help in the form of live tutors that can communicate with students online. It also provides flash cards, practice tests, and other skill building tools. You can find the Homework Help icon on our homepage next to the rotating banner of current events. We also have the After School Homework Club, which allows students to meet with homework coaches on week day afternoons for one on one assistance. This service is available at 5 library locations, Monday through Thursday afternoons (and Fridays at the Martin library), and is open to grades 3-8. You can learn more about the program, including guidelines and registration information, on our After School Homework Club guide page, which is located via the Research & Learn tab under the Research by Subject list.

I am 40 years old, have been married to my spouse for 20 years now. I have also had normal periods starting on time and lasting about 5 days. This is the 1st time I have had my period last over two weeks. I am not having any other signs of pre-menopause, no hot flashes, no moody swings, no extra hair in wrong places. I am having menstrual cramps off and on with this. I usually have cramps for the 1st day or two then they go away. What could be possible reasons for this?I have lost about 10 pounds over the last 6 weeks but that was an intentional diet I went on. I am 5' 7; and weigh about 130 lbs. I have also been taking Acci-berry one a day. I am not and have never been on any kind of birth control. I did have a steriod shot about a month ago for back spasm.

My late brothers sister inlaw keeps sending my nephews text messages saying that i have been sleeping with their sister and that i am the father of their sisters ten year old daughter and that she has proof that i am the father. Of course this has caused big trouble in family but i can prove that i was residing in england 18 months before the child was born and also the accussations are false Optional Information:State/Country: AustraliaAlready Tried:I have told everyone this is not true but no one wants to listen and it has caused me great stress at home and at work, what can i do. How can I get my daughter to stop lashing out at us?

My nine-year-old daughter has a temper that we find very hard to control. If something does not go her way she lashes out on us, hitting and kicking. Her tantrums can be over homework, spellings, washing her hair, having a shower; almost anything will set her off these days. She is very shy and quiet with others, and I worry that her self-esteem is very low. She tells us very little if anything about school. I am at a loss to know what to do. Her behaviour is just getting worse. How can we get her to behave and have some respect for us?

DAVID: Even though her behaviour is the main issue you have, I think the solution to her tantrums lies in her capacity to express her feelings and to problem-solve when she is faced with challenges.
I have long believed that when children struggle to voice their feelings in ways that we can understand, they are more likely to show us their distress by acting in bold, angry or challenging ways.
It is as if the release of anger, through tantrums, arguments or fights provides children with some temporary, but welcome, relief from the build up of other stresses or pressures.
We also know that some children struggle with things like flexibility, frustration-tolerance or problem-solving. So when things in their environment change, or when they are expected to move to the next task or activity, they can find it really difficult.
So when she receives your requests to organise herself, do her homework etc, she may feel totally thrown off balance. The "normal" demands you place on her to wash, or help out, may actually overload her. Or they may be triggers that ignite a wellspring of troubled feelings.
I'd recommend that you try to move away from the idea of controlling your daughter, and turn instead to trying to understand her. This is not to say that you stop having expectations of her and her behaviour, or that you stop having limits for her.
Rather, though, you balance the limits and rules that you have for her with kindness, understanding and warmth. In practice, you will need to be able to empathise with her and her upset.
Empathy is where we show another person that we can understand the feelings they may have. With children, who can rarely explain the complexity of their feelings, we often have to guess at how they might feel.
So we make empathetic statements to them like, "You look cross about having to do your homework. I'm guessing it is hard for you to do." Or "It is time for your shower… oh there's a frown… I'd say you hate being disturbed when you are relaxing".
Once you have helped her to recognise, in an understanding way, that there is some problem, you can then explore the reasons why this is so difficult for her.
So it may be that you adopt a very inquisitive, curious approach to finding out where her particular struggle lies. The Explosive Child by Ross W Greene might really help you to understand the nature of her difficulties.
Work with her to find out what the problem is rather than being prescriptive. Adopt the core belief that if your daughter can do well, she will do well and that something is blocking her from achieving "good" behaviour.
The essence of this style of parenting is to take a kind and firm approach to dealing with our children. We stay firm and consistent about what we expect of them and we are understanding and kind about the impact of those expectations.
In this parenting approach we also see our role as helping them to overcome problems, rather than simply getting cross with them for having problems, or struggles, in the first place.
It is, in essence, collaborative problem-solving where you demonstrate that you can understand that something bothers her and then work with her to find out what that might be, such that you can relieve the source of the bother.
I think that your daughter is likely to respond very positively to you if she sees that you try to understand her perspective, rather than feeling that you just keep pushing your own ideas on to her.
